Crotched East is VERY grown in! In the summer, you can make out most of the trails only because the kinds of trees that grew in are very different in appearance from those that are at the sides of the trails.

I saw it w/o snow, so it looked more filled than your photo. We didn't go far enough to see if the old lodge was still there. If the second photo is the T-bar below the parking lot, I didn't (think to) drive to the far end to look to see if any remains were there.

@ciscokid that's the old rental building. The lodge was taken down a while ago.

When Crotched was resurrected, what was the thought process of saving one side vs the other? And why not both?

2003. The unopened (East) side is in a different town, and they were looking for back taxes. The current side (West) has more vertical than the original Crotched (East) and sits right on route 47 where the east side is up an residential access road.

Without being crotchety, I too preferred the old names, since the "original CM" remains closed! The name, of course, is based on the shape of the mountain. BTW: Are there any other ski areas that are named for the shape of their mountain? The only other one that comes to mind is Saddleback.

The following information was relayed to me years ago by the late Furlong Friday:

Onset 1957: Gray horse bred in Kentucky by the (famous) Nuckols Brothers. This horse made 65 starts and is listed as a "winner", but NOT a stakes winner.

The archivist at the Keeneland (Kentucky) Library provided the following research data:

Onset raced 65 times with 15 wins, 8 seconds and 9 thirds winning a total of $26,313. The information about owners is in the message below.

The first race was in July of 1959 and the owner was listed as “Duell-Stewart.” His last race was in 1964. He was running for a $2,000 claiming tag and the owner was listed as “Billy Bob Stable.” Unfortunately, he did break down in that race...

And yes, both Ted Ede and I skied both East Crotched and the interconnect between the two.

I raced at Crotched East in HS, and skied the interconnect.

Other ski area names might include Whaleback and Hogback-closed.

Here's another one, maybe a bit of a stretch: apparently Cannon Mountain was named after a cannon-shaped rock formation located somewhere on it.

I wonder if that was a pennywise and pound foolish mistake by the town to insist on the back taxes and thus lose out on all of the future taxes. Did they intend to open both sides if not for the back tax issue?

What was the interconnect like? Was it relatively flat and mostly a skate or could you actually ski between the mountains?

Both were pretty flat from what I could see from the open side. However they both had snowmaking and lights before they closed I believe?

There was enough of a pitch to ski without poling, and had snowmaking and lights.
