What run did you ski?

Lights are on on the mountain and I am guessing that the snow guns will be turning on as soon as it hits wet bulb.

I hiked up plutos plunge but skied down the moonwalk and galaxy. It was good for straight lining but any turns and you sunk down to the rock bottom. that's why the trail choice wasn't good (due to it being all rocks underneath.

With the recent grading/rock breaking of those trails that brought lots of stones to the surface, you're lucky that that is all the damage you got!

I only heard about ten *dings* a lot of the damage was probably from doing one hockey stop :smiley:

I was going to try to post some photos of the ski day but it isn't working. I was getting errors about file size, then I resized the images and now I don't get any errors it just doesn't post anything.

According to a Snowmaker to whom I spoke this AM, 70 guns are running with 3-pumps - nominally 3000 GPM. With daytime highs for the next 4 or 5 days in the low 30s, I suspect they will run out of water before they runout of cold weather!

Was at the hill this morning, we may have an extra trail or three to open by the weekend over the normal opening routes.

Base cam is up and running. The hill is looking good, but they are currently closed for uphill due to the snowmaking/training. I walked up/down through through the woods yesterday.

I hope that natural snow helps them open up some extra trails on top of the normal opening day route. Also just wondering, does anyone know when they start staying open till 9pm? Usually they take a bit after opening to do that. Wish I could go to opening day this Friday 😔😔

Tuesday, 12/17 is the scheduled start of 'normal' hours. 9-9 Tues - Saturday and 9 -4 Sunday & Monday.

We open Friday with 9 - 4 hours for now.

As of yesterday the ponds were getting low & snowmaking had been cut back to lower Meteor only,,, the trail on the webcam that brings all skier traffic to the Rocket. That has been shut down now as well, and the carriage guns have been moved, probably to Super Nova. With rough grooming complete the snow on the main T to B route has plenty of time to drain and with a finish groom should be good on Friday.

Last weekends snow has held up well, 3" of compressed frozen granular remains which helps freeze the ground & provides a good base layer (woods & trails). If the 6" to 8" forecasts for tonight turn out correct there should be bonus terrain by Friday.

Crotched does tend to get some GREEN dot Trails open early making it a good early season choice for families. Check the report.

It will be interesting to see how quickly the snowmaking pond recharges with the very dry autumn and low groundwater levels.

Thursday saw the ponds pretty well drained & snowmaking shut down. Mother nature dropped 6+ inches of fresh wet snow on the hill overnight.

The opening day configuration includes the following trails with manmade snow:
Moonwalk & Satellite Summit from the top of Rocket Lift feeding into Meteor, Magnitude & Galaxie on the mid-mountain with Meteor & Magnitude providing access to Rocket Base.

The carpet & bunny slope will be available as well. The Valley Quad lift has been fully prepped as backup or use if a crowd develops.

The natural snow was very heavy & wet today but isn't deep enough to groom. With a hard freeze up tonight natural trails will not be open. Patrol may check them out if/when they start to look skiable.

Just got an email (13:30 ET) saying it snowed 4 inches in the last 48 hours. While that is true, it is a little disingenuous to be advertising it with the blow torch weather today. Got love the preprogrammed emails.

Got the same bad email. Went to the webcams and all Vail east properties I looked at had their webcams mysteriously offline.

That was reasonably accurate. Open were Satellite Summit, Moonwalk, Galaxy, Magnitude, Meteor (probably counted as "Upper and Lower"), the Park and Launch Pad. Cosmic Blast was supposed to be open but was a last-minute scratch.

If you really want to be picky, there were two distinct T2Bs. In addition, for those who know how to find it, Solstice Glade (the glade - not the trail) was skiing beautifully and it got a lot of traffic.

While it rained most of the day, the blowtorch didn't happen until after the lifts closed. I can't tell you what has happened since closing but as of 4PM today, there was virtually no snow-loss and no loss of open trail-count and the temp never reached 40 degrees. The forecast does show freezing temps returning by 5AM.

15 miles from the mtn, temp went from 36 to 57 from 5:35 to 6. Now back to 39, so the melting from temps will be minimal. 1.5" of rain will fill the ponds back up.
