I telephoned the Cog earlier today to confirm....the trail is no longer groomed and they no longer make snow, but it has reopened for winter operations, and skiers are welcome.

If you ski down they give you a second ride up for free, if there are seats available. You can buy tix online.

The winter train stops at Waumbeck Station at 4000 feet. Is this the same as the "water tank" stop when it actually ran as a ski lift?

hello again from the deep south part new england :) Down here elevation is important but not everything. All base elevations approx.

NC has steep peaks and valleys, difficult terrain for development.

Cataloochee ... 4700 but very far south. Still often the first to open.
Beech Mtn ...... 4600 and like Cataloochee with an entertaining access road.
Sugar Mtn....... 4200? whatever, I only go here every 2 decades :)
Wolf/Hatley......4000? will they every open again ?
App Ski Mt ...... 3600 ** ANOMOLY ** often best conditions

WV has more high-wide valleys and round peaks, better for development.

Snowshoe ....... 4100 on the main Basin side which is what opens first
Canaan Vly...... 3500 but with quite limited snowmaking so opens late
Whitegrass...... 3400 no snowmaking, no lifts. but often open early.
Timberline...... 3200 cold + snowmaking, better every year lately.

Va is a mix of NC and WV, but without the elevation. Notably...

Bryce Mt .......... 1300 ** MAJOR ANOMOLY ** often the best conditions

Plattekill takes the cake for open ski areas by that metric (according to Google Maps Terrain View), unless you're considering ski areas in the Southeast which are significantly higher.

Platty is about 2200' tops. (The numbers the mt. puts out are off). Prospect in Vt. is a bit over 2200. Bromley is just under 2000'.

I've skied Bryce periodically since the late '60s. They have a small footprint, few trails/short vertical, but the mtn has always been very well run, and by the same Locher family for decades. Haven't been there now for about five years, but over the last 30+ years they've had a really good snowmaking program. The little valley they are located in seems to be impervious to the higher elevation warm inversions that sometimes mess-up snowmaking at nearby higher places like Massanutten and Wintergreen. Thus, they make and hold snow very well.

PS: the "upside down" ski areas of the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast are a distinctive, if not unique, characteristic of the region and one of the few things we can claim as special about skiing in the region :-)

I think its a bit lower than 2300. But could be close. That hill peaks at about 3350 and the lift doesn't quite go to the actual peak. They used to claim the base was at 2400' and had an 1100' vert. But, given those numbers, Platty would be one of the 3500's but it isn't. A mountain's claimed numbers debunked. Who would have thought?

I actually wrote that, Rich! The stats section on the bottom is new or at least updated from when I wrote the blurb. It was my home mt. for about 15 years. 2200' base and 1100' vert is probably about correct.

For Belle, why wouldn't you consider Discovery, the biggest lodge, as the base?

Because it is not the lowest point that you can ski to. That would be like considering Jack Frost's Main Lodge as their base, even though it is above most skiable terrain.
