1. We may not have had as much snow as in previous seasons, but due to the absence of any thaw for 9-weeks, the snow we had really outlasted the greater amounts of snow that we had in previous seasons.
2. We had excellent skiing right thru Sat., March 15. The precipitous turn on Mar. 16 appears consistent with the quantity of great skiing in March of 2018-9.
3. The current #3 featured a good beginning and a good end with a terrible January/February.
I still see this season, even if it whimpers out in early April, as better than #3: 2016-7.
This thread is not placing a number/letter grade on this season: merely a comparison with the last 10 and riverc0il accurately points out, the last 10 years just have not been that good.
I remember 16/17 quite fondly out in upstate NY. Without actually viewing data to verify my memory, I feel like we had a solid January, a decent February, but March and April stuck out heavily. For 6 weeks straight, we had consistent cold and storms every 3-4 days dropping anywhere between 4-10 inches of snow every time. I was still skiing glades on April 9th at Gore.
Skiing mostly in NH these days, the snowfall was behind average. While consistent cold is good, I find it hard to rate this year above 16/17. There weren't many high moments this year meteorologically. That year, there were plenty. While I'll remember this year as being good for consistently decent trail counts during the primary chunk of winter as well as being OK for touring semi-maintained/maintained backcountry, as someone not in NNE, I'll also remember it more for a massively disappointing melt out that began at the end of February and didn't really have even a day of reprieve. Subject to change, I suppose, if we truly get incredibly lucky with an April northeaster.
