Collecting trail maps?

I've got a boatload of NY ski area maps from the early 70s including: West Mtn., Oak, Catskill, Hunter, Big Tupper, Scotch Valley, etc. , etc. If someone wants to make an offer, I can go through them and make a list.

My collection is a lot more humble than either Woody's or Rick's. For now, everything is arranged by state or country and simple storage boxes.

But I'm planning to put at least my vintage (1960's) maps into vinyl folders.

Looks like a great way to keep track of what you have, Andy, and to protect the maps.

Back in the late 1960s when I started collecting trail maps, I kept them in a cardboard accordion file. Don’t think I saw nice storage boxes like yours back then. I felt like I was a hotshot lawyer or business executive when I toted that big file around, but it would have been too clumsy for a collection as large as yours.

Your photos reminded me of the way good (read: organized) antique dealers display their postcards, ads, and maps. I wish they’d display brochures the same way. Then I wouldn’t have to paw through sometimes-musty stacks and boxes of old road maps, brochures for warm-weather tourist attractions, recipe pamphlets, and the like. Right now I can’t remember a single ski brochure I’ve found in an antique shop or mall.

I think you’ll enjoy keeping and displaying your best brochures in some albums.

I love it!! Especially love the older patches ( Underhill Ski Bowl) as I grew up nearby but it was closed before I could ski there.

Underhill … that ski patch was my Holy Grail for at least 15 years. I’d seen one on eBay priced at a measly $5 but it had been sold already. I knew two collectors who had them but weren’t interested in parting with them. I’d drooled over the Underhill patch on display at the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum in Stowe. I asked friends and fellow collectors to keep an eye out for one.

Finally, another collector (he used to sell on eBay) snagged one when he purchased someone’s collection. I didn’t want to blow my “fun fund” savings on a single patch, but we managed to come to terms on a trade for a 1940s-early 50s Bousquet’s Ski Area patch.

Had to pull out the screws in my frame of patches and pins in order to give Underhill Ski Bowl its rightful place of honor. (By the way, this patch comes in two color variations: with the light blue background that my patch has, and also with a dark blue background.)

And …
my current Holy Grail is a ski patch from Chickley Alp in Charlemont MA.

One of my little fun things with the view binders is I print out ski movie posters for the front of them, which nobody ever sees but I like it.

Who gets paid to write this stuff? And more importantly, where were all those ski babes when I was on the go go learning how to turn those long long skis in the snow snow?

For some reason they just don’t make movies like that any more.

Here is a complete list of what I found in my NY File, all from the 1969 to 1973:

Also: Multilith Trail Maps of Whiteface, Gore and Belleayre

Someone else has dibs on Catskill, Highmont, Taconic Trails, North Creek, and Noname, but for some reason, I seem to have multiples of Noname.

I collect only mountains I have skied and mountains of historical significance from New England. I also collect interesting old ads and skiing postcards. Much like others, some are framed but most are in binders

Very interesting. Which ski areas do you consider of historical significance? Are you just collecting the oldest ski area in each state?

I collect trail maps but only of places I have skied. I used to display them on my garage wall when I a had a garage with a finished wall.
This is what I've been collecting lately. But only to save the $5.00 charge when I go back to one of these places. ;)
Anyone think these will be collectable in the future?
Maybe the Epic card in the future after they go under?

Trackerbiker, I also only collect trail maps from areas which I have skied. I also save the RFID cards both to save the $5 and keep as a momento. I save my stuff organized by ski season.

I also save RFID cards. I put them right in my piles of trail maps, probably have 2 or 3 from my each of my regular resorts ;)

Afrazer202, “historical” is subjective to me. The area may not actually be “historical” but to me they are. For example the age of an area my pique my curiosity or personal experience with a mountain I.e. Blue Hills but may not be considered historically significant by others.
