Great day at Waterville Valley today with true midwinter skiing in late March! 3-4 inches of mostly dry snow fell throughout the day before switching to freezing rain at 3pm or so. There was also a bit of hail at one point. No wind to speak of.
Pretty much everything was open except for a couple trails on Green Peak. All the lifts were open except Sunnyside and Northside. The Tecumseh Express had a 5-minute line in the morning, so I avoided it and stuck to Valley Run and Green Peak instead. The lines at Tecumseh lessened in the afternoon. No significant lines for any other lift. I noticed the Tecumseh and High Country T-bar and were both running slower than usual, with several T’s missing from the latter. Rode the lift with a couple of people who said they were at Cannon in the morning and went to WV instead upon finding that Cannon was closed due to wind.
Also rode the new Exhibition T-bar, it’s a nice lift and should serve that part of the mountain well. From what I could tell, the trail wasn’t drastically altered as the top terminal sits off to the side of The Chute with plenty of width to ski around it.
Conditions were nice packed powder (with some frozen granular mixed in) over an icy base, but boilerplate patches were small and avoidable. Natural snow trails in the Northside were open with good coverage on Tangent and Periphery but some rocks on Preston’s Path. Low angle trails all skied very nicely, with Higher Ground, Ruthie’s Run, Chandler’s Way, and Gema also being standouts. There was racing on Tommy’s World Cup Run but the trail was open to the public after it concluded.
According to a ski patroller I rode the lift with, they’ll be closing in 3 weeks and should have plenty of snow to last until then with a good amount of terrain open.
