Returning for another hint now that someone has said it. Mt Whitney is in fact the area referenced in Clue 3 - it was briefly a publicly operated by ORDA.
Now that it’s been spoken… let me rephrase my 3 Clues with new context.
1) This lost Northeast area’s name once shared initials with an open Vermont ski area
2) It was one of the biggest to close, and remain closed, in its state; offering night skiing and snowmaking
3) A geographic feature lies only a couple miles away from this lost Northeast ski area. An entirely separate geographic feature sharing the same name, in an entirely separate location (2 locations, same name) is also located within 1 mile of Mt Whitney. The two geographic features Mabel… excuse me, may be, in different states.
