Heck I didn't know the answer to my WWII question....

So not according to a N. Arizona professor, "This unit, the only one in the American Army trained for mountain warfare, participated in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations from 1944 until the end of the conflict. "
The 10th was comprised of 3 regiments 87, 85, & 86 and took men from the 10th Calvary & 31st reg.

But the back of my mind says Bmwskier is correct. If only I hadn't thrown away those back issues of the New England ski museum journals............

There was another unit that started training before the 10th in winter and ski warfare, saw combat in several theaters of the war but didn't have a mountain tab.

I'm not sure of this, I'm trying to remember the story. Minnie Dole a founder of the Ski Patrol, and others suggested to President that the U.S. needed troops who could fight in the winter on skis. I think they were inspired by Finnish troops and their success for a while against Russian troops in the late 1930s.
FDR agreed and authorized ski troops. I believe that, at first, those who volunteered had to get letters of recommendation stating that they could ski before they were accepted. I think that Dole had some say in who got in, at first.
The unit formed a regimental combat team and early in WWII fought against the Japanese in Alaska. Later that unit and others became part of the 10th Mountain Division that trained at Camp Hale in Colorado and fought the Germans in Italy.
The late Mason Flagg, a long-time Wachusett skier and legend among Central Massachusetts skiers, was in from the start. He fought in Alaska and In Italy, where he was wounded. He received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star, I believe. Ollie Maninnen (sp?), first ski school director at Wachusett, also was a member of the 10th, as were several Central Mass. skiers. Ollie is credited with pulling Bob Dole, later senator from Kansas and a GOP presidential candidate, out of a shell crater and back to where medics could treat and evacuate him when he (Dole) was badly wounded.
Somebody do me a favor and correct any, or all, my mistakes and/or lack of information. This was spur of the moment and I can't vouch for most of it.
Of course, the 10th Mountain trail on Mt. Wachusett honors the soldiers in that division

Thanks Bill29. So are you saying that the other group (not the 10th Mountain Div.) was actually a forerunner to the 10th Mountain Division?

No, it wasn't though it did fight in the same theatres as the 10th did.

Probably not the answer you're looking for, but the abandoned T-Bar at CM almost fits the bill. The story as I heard it: Someone broke the transit so they eyeballed the last few towers. They were far enough off that it repeated derailed, even with the most extreme settings of the shiv wheels. The reason this won't be the right answer is that it was never repaired!

Again, that's the story as I heard it. If anyone knows differently, I'd love to hear it.
