Per Skiology Matt on Facebook*... during the 2021-2022 season, Vail wasn't paying overtime to Wildcat or Attitash employees until they hit 56 hours per week, thus the mass exodus of labor last year. If true I'm somewhat shocked, but also not. It's a major violation of federal labor laws to do so; they also have had prior lawsuit(s) against them for not paying workers what are rightfully owed.

While I don't know the specifics, I do not that labor laws relating to seasonal employees vary, and the 56 hour time frame has been used in the ski industry for years.

Yep, seasonal non-exempt is not 40 hrs like a regular hourly.

Vail-owned Paoli Peaks in Indiana has already closed for the season, after being open for less than 25 days. Meanwhile, Indiana's other ski area, Perfect North Slopes, is still open. Based on the comments, it seems like people are very unhappy about this.

seems most of the comments on facebook are about opening up as a mountain bike park...it's almost as if the majority of locals have given up on skiing? Weird

Vail didn't shut them down. Apparently, there was a mass resignation (like what happened at Gunstock last year) that shut them down.

Yeah Matt doesn't know the law. Ski resorts operating in part or entirely on National Forest lands are exempt from paying overtime at 40 hours. 56 is perfectly legal at Wildcat and Attitash.

They've been shut down for a long time. Tough to look skiable in Indiana without having made snow or done any grooming recently.

It's not just Forest Service land in NH it's any seasonal business. It's up to the employer to decide when to pay overtime because the employees are exempt.

Paoli is about 60 miles south of Perfect North. Not sure that's an apt comparison any more than Bradford is to Pat's Peak.

That being said, Peaks had the place dialed in snowmaking wise. I suspect Vail will get there, but taking over 19 resorts and then being hit by a pandemic and labor shortage has certainly lengthened the time.

While the work over the summer at Crotched we certainly not glamorous, it has resulted in reliable operations and good/excellent surface conditions. I suspect Paoli will get there too.

Crotched seems to have a number of people who are personally "vested" (for lack of a better word) and care deeply about the ski operations, regardless of who owns it...I gotta believe that makes a big difference in the ongoing success. It's much easier to win when Moe Mentum is on the team...wonder if Paoli has anything like that?

Well, it seems appropriate for this thread to make at least a temporary reappearance with Attitash's lastest announcement. Yet again this year, there will be no summer operations. This time there's no lift project to use as an excuse. They are also permanently closing their zipline and mountain coaster. I'm getting the feeling that summer operations are done for good.

I agree that summer ops are probably done. Other than the mountain coaster and zip lines there really wasn’t much else worth going to. Cranmore’s summer ops are so good it seems silly for Attitash to even try and compete without the zip line and mountain coaster.
