You know what a climbing harness is. The lanyard is a short rope with hardware that connects the harness to whatever you are hanging from.

The article did not explain what the lanyard was and as someone who never rode a zip-line, I was asking an honest question.

I've been pleased to see a lot of deferred maintenance work being done this off-season. In my 15-years at CM, I have never seen so many paid people on the hill actually working! That being said, the one thing they have done regularly:in all previous seasons was to remove the appropriate number of chairs from each lift to do the required number of grip-checks.

The issue is that they used a product made by a climbing goods company and not a product made by a zip line goods company. Though it might seem that such an item made for climbing would be fine for zip lines, the fact that the product was not designed and tested for that specific use is where the problem is. A similar scenario would be allowing a bike helmet for use in ski races- yes, it's a helmet, but it has not been designed and tested and approved for that purpose, even though it could provide protection. The link I gave is for a specific zip line product line, and they likely have inspection and replacement protocols and time lines when used in commercial settings. The Petzl units did not have that kind of detail, since not designed specifically for zip line use.

Disclaimer: I heard this from someone familiar with the case.

If only they started charging $30 per car a year earlier, maybe they could have afforded to replace the $26 lanyards. Messed up. Will be interesting to see if the director loses his job. Broomfield could try to pin the blame on the mountain itself as they sometimes do when they're deflecting criticism, but most likely PR will stay quiet hoping investors don't hear about it.

Still, wouldn't be surprised if we see a New York Times feature coming, or some other investigative journalism.

Anyone else notice that Vail was saying yesterday was the deadline for Epic Pass price increases?

I ignored all of the notifications since I figured they just meant the buddy passes would be excluded after yesterday. But the wording is stronger than it has been in past years... deceptively so. As of this afternoon, prices are still the same.

I assume early pass sales will be down with inflation stressing people's budgets with
metro day-trippers wondering if gas will be $7 or $8/gallon next season.

They reduced the number of Buddy Passes to two close to a month ago. This is the end of them for this year. They appear willing to take some reduced numbers of skiers in light of prices returning to "normal" (when is a price increase not a price increase?) Their third quarter investor webcast is soon, I anticipate a small overall improvement in ticket sale $ has been engineered. We'll see...

With fewer skiers, some new lifts and if everyone car pools there may be less 'sucking' and more skiing, Incentiveizing car pools could/should appear, good thing if they can do without costing us money (give the driver a beer - I like it!)

At least there is no apparent shortage of gas like 50 years ago... stations were closed ODD/EVEN license plate restrictions on buying gas were in place & people carrying around siphon hoses really sucked.

Bright point, we'd take a longer weekend & come back to work complaining "We could't get any gas until the truck came Monday afternoon."
