Crotched Mountain - 2022-3 Season

What a difference 2-days makes. I had plans for Weds. and Fri. that precluded my driving to VT. On Weds., all CM's trails were covered T2B except Comet Drop, Re-entry, Milky Way and Blastoff. Even the Magic Carpet hill was fully skiable.

Today, after 2-days of 80+ degree weather, the mountain could still be 50% open but they would need to push a lot of snow. Even with my optimistic view on spring skiing, no way to break even.

FWIW: I really enjoyed my runs doing 3K vertical on Weds. and 1.5K today (Friday).

I certainly agree with you! Most corporations (especially Vail) only care about their bottom line (profits) even though they try to tell you differently.

Ski areas like Berkshire East are just the opposite. Yes they did offer a spring pass ($139) but if you bought a 23/24 pass before 3/31 they applied $75 of your spring pass towards your 23/24 pass. On top of that, they re-opened last Saturday (4/8) "just for the heck of it" welcoming ALL B'East season passes and offering $20 lift tickets. There was a really good crowd there and I doubt they made money let alone broke even but everyone was having a good time and praised Jon Schaefer for re-opening.

Now that "enhanced my skiing experience"!

Both Mt. Snow and Okemo were open this weekend and Mount Snow until the 23rd.

It's worth noting that Mount Snow is only open with 2 trails on Carinthia with lift tickets that cost $119! Might as well go ahead and just say season passholders only.

Jay peak is $109
Sugarbush tomorrow is $99.

Not sure why anyone would be expecting a deal.

How many of those have 2 trails open?
Although those are also absurdly expensive.

Sugarloaf is $64, but $39 online for next weekend with much more terrain open. That seems more reasonable.

If you bought early at $549 it was less the Northeast Pass and big deal, you got an extra week! Also, as a now senior (60 +) my pass was $399 this year & $429 next season).

On another note, I didn't have to deal with the crowds, paid parking, or the reckless skiers some of the Epic mountains had.

While I was a little disappointed that Crotched didn't reopen for the 1st and 2nd, I had great days at Okemo and Mt Snow after that.
I also feel that Crotched's employees are almost all local to the area, and give the hill a different and positive vibe compared to some of the larger resorts. That being said, I had very positive interactions with the Okemo and Mt Snow staff that I chatted with on my recent visits. Feel free to crap on Vail if you must(try the Vail Sucks thread for that), but Crotched pulled off a welcome major improvement from last year's limited hours, lift issues and staffing problems.
Just to add, I skied 3 days at Mt Abram in March and had a great time there, so I do also appreciate the smaller independent areas.

I am very happy with my B'East pass and you definitely need to get there next season.

I don't want you or others think that I blame the mountain staff at any Epic Mountain for the issues I've seen or others who post about it and yes most of them are locals just trying to earn a living. The blame falls totally on corporate and their believe that every mountain should be run the same. The staff at these mountains work hard and the ones I've talked with were always friendly and courteous. As for Crotched, I've never skied there but I'm glad things improved this year over last year. Everyone has their favorite mountains and that's good. I used to love Mount Snow but don't like how Vail has run it since they took over. My main gripe was the crowds & recklessness on the weekends, but I may go back in a couple of years after I retire and ski midweek.

As Ted said, this is a CM thread. We did not have huge crowds; we did not have paid parking; and we had no more reckless skiers than any other Epic or non-Epic ski area.

As to when ski areas closed: It appears that Vail provided guidance, but the final decision was made by local management. Both Sunapee and Okemo extended.

As Ted said, this is a CM thread. We did not have huge crowds; we did not have paid parking; and we had no more reckless skiers than any other Epic or non-Epic ski area.

I did 1st first sunset hike of the spring, and had a great ride down. Pluto's is only missing a 6 foot gap in coverage, and the upper part is still quite deep with 4-5' along the trails edge.

Nice pics Quietman. Now we have proof JS doesn’t use hyperboles. ;) That’s so much better coverage than parts of what I skied on last week 135 miles north of you.

I found the black flies to be really bad yesterday. Will be using my "over-the-face" bug netting tomorrow. (Today I was at Killington.)

When I climbed the hill yesterday, there was a very stiff breeze from the east. This likely kept the bugs away. Thanks, I will keep this in mind for less windy evenings.

No bugs today. No longer an unbroken T2B route, but the trails, Pluto's and Jupiter's, were fully skiable with "no walking required".
