You were complaining about mountains selling passes now. You stated:
Will the majority of mountains in Maine sell you a pass now? No, not even close.

I pointed out every major area in Maine is selling them, but I used 1000' instead of major.

I was not complaining about places selling passes now. I was just highlighting the different financial and season length priorities between places that sell their passes now vs later.

There are 18 ski areas in the state which sell season passes. The list you linked to is missing Pinnacle, Quoggy Jo, Titcomb, & Spruce Mountain. Big Squaw & Powderhouse Hill are the only two places not currently selling season passes.

I was just correcting your inaccurate statistic, I wasn't trying to make any point there. Spruce and Titcomb are also not volunteer run.

I don't need to look, I ski both places regularly and am very familiar with how they operate and the people that run them. Both mountains are nonprofits with volunteers that help out and serve on the board of directors, but both are run day-to-day by paid mountain managers and mountain ops staff, similar to BMOM or Whaleback.

Also, you linked to a club in Michigan affiliated with Alpine Valley. Apparently 60 seconds of looking wasn't enough!

That's kinda the point. Every major area in Maine including Sam's BMOM is ready to take your pass dollars for next year right now. Sam needs to back up his statement making those a minority by including every hill, knoll and hummock available for skiing.

Is a club membership really a season pass?

Yes, the "membership" is equivalent to a season pass, but you get $75 refunded to you if you put in 8 hours of volunteer time doing things such as clearing trails, helping with lessons, or helping in the kitchen.

The mountain has two paid year-round managers, and seasonal paid staff to run the lifts, make snow, groom, and teach lessons.

I don't think he's saying they aren't important. I think he's saying these mole hills and their infinitesimal market share of New England skier visits are not really relevant when making season pass comparisons. They have far different operating strategies to remain viable. I share that view.

I don't disagree that smaller ski areas have different operating strategies. My point was simply that there are many ski areas which don't sell season passes until well after the ski season is over. This seems to be true for most ski areas which aren't on a mega pass and/or aren't corporately owned. Yes, many of these ski areas are smaller, but others are similar in size, or larger, than Crotched.

Thsi weekend's forecast makes it easy for some who were hoping to squeeze out 1 more weekend not too.... Very wet and warm on Saturday with a chance of thunderstorms for many places as the front works it's way across New England Saturday afternoon and then a hard freeze up for Sunday....

They announced that they were contemplating not opening because of the trauma of staff due to the death. That the weather turned out bad might have sealed the deal of closing.

When it comes to loss of young teenage skiers( or any age for that matter) season passes and vertical add up to a hill of beans
