when I've skied it, everything is white and the lake is such a distance, it all kinds of blends together, doesn't feel anything like the summertime photo. Especially when you're elsewhere on the mountain, and there's a much smaller body of water closer (google sez Saddleback Lake), it makes the big lake look like it's further away. Perception I guess, to answer your question. but certainly see your point from the summer photo
When I ski at Cannon, I feel like I'm skiing into the lake. but as mentioned by many others, it's only on one facet of the mountain.
At Dutchess the Hudson River was quite prominent in the view, but I never felt like I could ski into it.
This is all very subjective, not thinking there is a right or wrong answer
